Youth Program

Next Session Starts January 11, 2018!

Course Description

This Free part-time 10-week training program for youth, between the ages of 16 & 30, residing within Grande Prairie or surrounding area, aims at equipping participants with the necessary skills to interact and succeed in their volunteer and work positions throughout their lifetime. The technical and soft skills they learn are transferable between volunteer positions and paid employment.

Youth participants obtain Alberta Industry Recognized training and certification in:
Standard First Aid Level C with CPR and AED (2 days) (Saturday/Sunday),
- Hydrogen Sulfide Training (H2S) (1 day) (Saturday)
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) (1/2 day) (Saturday)
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) (1/2 day) (Saturday)
- Food Safety (2 days) (Saturday/Sunday),
- Pro-Serve (Saturday),
- Pro-Tect (Saturday), and
- Customer Service (Saturday).

*Certificates will be handed out upon completion of whole program.

Youth participants will learn and develop skills in Workshops on:
- Knowing Yourself and Understanding Others,
- Group Dynamics,
- Working as Part of a Team,
- Communication Skills,
- Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem,
- Assertiveness Skills,
- Negotiation Skills
- Feedback Skills (Providing and Receiving),
- Conflict Resolution,
- Volunteering (How, Where and Benefits),
- Stress Management,
- Time Management,
- Managing Change and Transition,
- Critical Thinking,
- Problem Solving,
- Decision Making,
- Goal Setting and Action Planning,
- Developing and Delivering Group Presentations,
- Work Ethic and Employer Expectations,
- Identifying Transferable Skills,
- Developing cover letters and resumes, and

- Preparing for and attending interviews

Youth participants will gain onsite experience by completing a 25 hour Practicum volunteering with a local non-profit or charity organization within Grande Prairie and area (Volunteer time to be completed around this program, work and/or school.)

Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be between the ages of 16 and 30
  • Must be a resident of  of Grande Prairie or surriunding area
  • Must complete a Criminal Record Check (once the program starts)
  • Must be able to access dependable transportation to and from training, workshops and practicum.

Required Commitment
  • Will be required to attend all training and workshop sessions
  • Will be required to complete 25 hours of Volunteer Service (Practicum)
